When Ruben Studdard won ‘American Idol’ in 2003, fans believed he would go on to be the next Luther Vandross.
Things didn’t go quite as smoothly for the singer dubbed “The Velvet Teddy Bear.”
After he was crowned the ‘American Idol’ winner, his career got off to a fantastic start when his first single ‘Flying Without Wings’ debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard charts. His first album “Soulful” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts.
His gospel album “I Need An Angel,” released in 2004, entered the gospel charts at No. 1.
But Ruben’s follow up albums didn’t do quite as well. In fact, he was dropped by J Records in 2007. He released an album with Hickory Records in 2009, but the CD didn’t give Ruben the career boost he needed.
Now the singer, who has had an ongoing battle with his weight — and much-publicized issues with the IRS — is competing on the new season of “The Biggest Loser.” If he wins the show, he goes home with $250,000 and his health.
“I want a second chance to reinvent myself. Not just on the outside but on the inside,” he said at the start of the show.
He is the heaviest contestant competing this season, weighing in at 462 lbs.
